Public Sector Clerkships and Grad Programmes


Interested in life in  the public sector after law school? Several government departments offer internships and grad programmes as a pathway to enter the sector: either in policy, or in legal work.

Government Legal Network
More than 850 lawyers. Offices throughout New Zealand, majority of work in Wellington
Lawyers in the Government Legal Network provide expert legal leadership to the Crown. Work includes representing the Crown in the Courts, lending expertise to policy development, negotiating significant commercial agreements, drafting legislation and advancing New Zealand’s strategic interests on the global stage.

Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE)
MBIE is the government’s lead business-facing agency. Its purpose is to grow the New Zealand economy to provide a better standard of living for all New Zealanders.
MBIE run policy internships and a policy graduate programme programme.
Policy issues MBIE deal with include: Immigration, construction, major events, employment, trade, science and innovation, commerce, competition and consumer law, accident compensation law, science, financial law, energy and resources.
Policy summer internship 2017/2018 (Wellington): applications open from 21 July – 13 August. Internships run from November 2017 to February 2018.
TupuTai Pasifika policy internship (Auckland and Wellington): applications open from 21 July – 13 August 2017. Internships run November 2017 – February 2018.
Policy Graduate Programme: applications open from 21 July – 13 August 2017. Two start options: February 2018 or August 2018.

The Treasury
The Treasury is the Government’s lead advisor on economic, financial and regulatory policy. They provide strategic policy advice on the New Zealand economy, as well as monitoring and managing the financial affairs of the Government, and assessing public sector proposals with economic and financial implications.
Treasury run a summer internship programme for students from a broad range of disciples including law, policy, mathematics, science, arts and more. They also run an 18 month graduate programme.
