Want some cash to go towards your study? How about applying for a scholarship?

There are hundreds of scholarships and grants available across the main universities. Many people never think to apply, or think filling out the application will be too hard, but with so many on offer it’s worth taking a look to see if you’re eligible. And with a little bit of effort, you could have some serious financial help towards your studies.

Scholarships are available at all levels of study from school leavers to post-graduate students, and vary in what they cover. Some scholarships come as a one-off lump sum payment, while others cover course fees or course costs and living expenses.

Scholarships will require you to meet certain criteria, such as:

  • Area of study
  • Academic achievement
  • Community involvement
  • Leadership
  • Ethnicity
  • Financial hardship

You may need to provide evidence of your financial situation, copies of your academic transcripts, character references, and often a written statement on why you should receive the scholarship.

You can often use the same information to apply for different scholarships at once – it makes sense to apply for as many scholarships as you are eligible for. This may all sound like a lot of work, but if an afternoon of gathering information and writing a little bit about yourself can net you a few thousand dollars, why not go for it?

The CareersNZ website has some handy hints on what to look out for when applying for scholarships.

And to make it even easier, we’ve scoured the internet and provided links to the scholarship pages below. Happy scholarship hunting!
